Disaster Relief

Disaster Relief

Nainarkuppam – A Journey of Seven Years

When Share and Care first stepped into the small fishing village of Nainarkuppam, we saw a community struggling with hardship and neglect. Families lived without proper toilets, children suffered without medical care, and youth had no safe space to grow or dream. Life was tough, and hope was fading.

Dignity Restored: We built 150 toilets, giving families the gift of cleanliness, safety, and respect.

Pulicat Project – A Journey of Shelter, Health, and Hope

Pulicat, a small coastal town, was once home to families living in fragile, broken-down houses. Their lives were filled with daily struggles, crumbling walls that could not shield them from rains, empty plates that left children hungry, and untreated illnesses that slowly weakened both young and old.

Restoring Homes.

We renovated 14 to 17 houses, turning unsafe shelters into warm, secure homes. For families who once feared the next storm or heavy rain, these homes became a safety and comfort one. Mothers no longer had to worry about leaking roofs, and children finally had a peaceful place to study and sleep.

Feeding Hungry Hearts

Alongside housing, we reached out to 125 families with dry ration kits and food supplies. For parents who had often gone to bed with the heavy pain of not being able to feed their children, this support was nothing short of a lifeline.

Healing Through Care

We also organized medical camps, providing free check-ups and essential medicines. For many elders who had silently endured years of sickness, and children whose coughs and fevers went untreated, these camps brought relief, healing, and renewed strength.

Manali Project – Standing Beside Families Through the Storms

Many years ago, the coastal community of Manali faced one of the most difficult chapters in its history. For nearly 7 to 8 years, families here—over 250 underprivileged households—lived under the shadow of repeated cyclones and natural disasters. With every storm, homes were torn apart, livelihoods were washed away, and families were left with nothing but fear and uncertainty about their future.

It was during these darkest hours that Share and Care Children’s Welfare Society stepped forward, choosing to walk hand in hand with the people of Manali. We believed that no family should stand alone in times of disaster, and so our mission became clear—to stand beside them, to bring relief, and to restore hope.

Monthly Support for Daily Needs

Month after month, we reached out to the affected families with the simple essentials they needed to survive and regain their strength. Families received provisions, groceries, toiletries, and mats—items that may seem small but carried the power to bring stability and dignity back into their lives.

For parents who had lost everything, these supplies meant that their children would not go to bed hungry. For the elderly, it meant comfort and security during uncertain days. And for the entire community, it meant they were not forgotten. This steady monthly support became a lifeline, helping families face each day with renewed courage.

Healing Through Medical Camps

Beyond food and essentials, we understood that disaster does not only affect homes—it affects health too. The lack of proper sanitation, clean water, and medical access made families more vulnerable to illness.

To meet this urgent need, regular medical camps were organized in the community. Doctors, nurses, and volunteers came together to provide check-ups, medicines, and treatments for children, elders, and families who were struggling to cope. These camps brought more than just healthcare—they brought reassurance, reminding families that they were cared for and supported.

Tsunami Relief Camps – A Ray of Hope Amid the Waves

When the devastating tsunami of 2004 struck India’s shores, it did more than destroy homes—it swept away the peace, security, and stability of hundreds of families. In an instant, life changed forever. Fear lingered in every heart, hunger gnawed at empty stomachs, and despair clouded the spirit of entire communities. Families who once lived with dignity suddenly found themselves with nothing but loss and uncertainty.

It was during these darkest days that Share and Care Children’s Welfare Society rose as a guiding light of hope. We knew that what people needed most was not only relief for their immediate suffering, but also reassurance that they were not alone—that someone stood beside them in their pain.

Through our relief camps, we reached nearly 1,000 people in and around the affected coastal areas, extending care, comfort, and compassion when it was needed most.

 Food for the Hungry

Hunger was one of the most painful realities families faced after the tsunami. Many had gone days without a proper meal, surviving on scraps or nothing at all. Our relief teams stepped in to provide warm, freshly prepared meals to children, mothers, and elders.

Each plate of food carried more than just nourishment—it carried love, dignity, and a promise that they had not been abandoned. For a mother watching her child eat again with relief on her face, or for an elder sipping warm food after days of emptiness, these meals restored not only strength but also faith.

 Shelter for the Homeless

The giant waves left countless families homeless overnight. With homes reduced to rubble and belongings swept away, people were left exposed to the harshness of weather and the heaviness of grief.

We set up temporary shelters where families could find safety, rest, and a sense of humanity once again. These shelters became more than just a roof over their heads—they became a space of healing, recovery, and community. Here, families could breathe a little easier, knowing they were safe, cared for, and not forgotten.

A Ray of Hope in the Aftermath

The tsunami was one of the most heartbreaking tragedies our nation has faced, but through the compassion of many, hope was not lost. The Manali relief camps run by Share and Care were a reminder that even in the face of overwhelming destruction, human kindness can rebuild broken spirits.

For every child who smiled again, every elder who felt cared for, and every family who found the courage to rise from despair—this was the true impact of standing together in times of disaster.

2015 Cyclone Relief – When Young Hearts Stepped In

In 2015, a devastating cyclone tore through villages, leaving families with nothing but broken homes and shattered hopes. The storm not only destroyed roofs and walls, it shook the very security of everyday life.

During those painful days, the youth became our strength. Through heartfelt campaigns in schools and colleges, young students came forward with open hearts. They collected food, clothing, medicines, bedsheets, and other basic needs, proving that compassion knows no age.

With their support, 125 families who had lost everything found comfort in warm meals, clean clothes, and medicines that saved lives. For many, even a simple bedsheet meant protection, dignity, and the feeling that someone cared.

2016 Varadah Cyclone Relief

The Varadah cyclone in 2016 struck Chennai with devastating force, leaving behind flooded homes, broken shelters, and families struggling to survive each day. The cries for help were many, and the needs were urgent—food, clean drinking water, clothing, medicines, and the simplest daily essentials.

In this moment of crisis, Share and Care Children’s Welfare Society rose with compassion and action. With generous contributions pouring in from different states, we were able to collect and carefully collate relief materials—provisions, water supplies, toiletries, bedsheets, clothing, and life-saving medicines.

Our teams reached out to the most vulnerable—slum families, elderly people in old age homes, and those seeking shelter in government flood relief camps. We not only distributed essential supplies but also organized medical camps to ensure that no one was left untreated in the aftermath of the disaster.

For many, this support meant more than survival—it was a ray of dignity and hope in the middle of despair. Each packet of food, each drop of clean water, each blanket offered warmth and reassurance that they were not forgotten.

Thanks to the compassion of donors and well-wishers, hundreds of families were able to rebuild their strength and courage to move forward.

COVID-19 Relief 2020- early stages of covid

The year 2020 was one of the darkest chapters in all of our journey. The second wave of COVID-19 brought fear, hunger, and helplessness to thousands of families. Many lost their loved ones, jobs disappeared overnight, and for countless people, even getting a simple meal became a daily struggle.

At Share and Care Children’s Welfare Society, we could not remain silent when so many lives were at risk. With the support of kind-hearted donors, we began a mission of hope.- rephrase

Breakfast for Survival – For over 4,385 people, we served hot and healthy breakfast every single day, continuing tirelessly for three months. For families who had nothing left, this was not just food—it was comfort, strength, and the assurance that someone still cared.

Essential Supplies for Families – We reached out to the most affected in Chennai, Erode, Thiruvallur, and Kerala. Over 5,883 families received dry ration kits, groceries, toiletries, clothing, bedsheets, and medicines to help them survive the hardest days of lockdown.

Medical Help and Covid Medicines – We arranged medical camps and distributed COVID medicines, also educated the people the importance of wearing mask and usage of hand sanitizers. Ensuring that people who could not afford treatment still had access to care and relief.

Monthly Provisions – To reduce the fear of starvation, 820 families were given monthly provision kits for continued support. Step by step, this lifeline grew, and by the end of our campaign, over 10,000 families had been touched with kindness and care.

Every ration kit, every plate of food, and every strip of medicine carried the love of our donors. For many, it was the difference between despair and survival. Families who once sat in darkness now found light, because someone far away believed they mattered.

This project was more than relief—it was a reminder that in the face of a global crisis, humanity shines it’s brightest when we care for one another.

Additionally, these international initiatives have supported our rural development programs, helping to improve the living conditions, education, and livelihood opportunities in underprivileged communities.
